Not all midwives have access to a Medicare provider number.
Midwives wanting to access a Medicare provider number either need a notation as an eligible midwife or an endorsement for scheduled medicines. Midwives with an endorsement for scheduled medicine may also prescribe medication (dependent on State and Territory legislation).
To apply for notation or endorsement midwives may visit the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia website, www.nursingmidwiferyboard.org.au . Alternatively Midwives Australia Associates can log in to the members area of the website and go to the section on eligibility. All the necessary forms are available to assist members and the sequence of the application process is detailed.
Once a midwife has a notation as an eligible midwife or an endorsement for scheduled medicines they can apply for a Medicare provider number. The forms are available at Medicare Australia or are available in the Members area for Midwives Australia Associate members.
Eligible midwives meet criteria set down by the Nursing and Midwife Board of Australia:
- 3 years postgraduate experience,
- Currency across all areas of midwifery,
- Completion of a professional review program
- Completion of a prescribing course (transitional arrangements may apply).
Eligible midwives apply to have their registration with the NMBA notated, and then can apply for a Medicare provider number.
Midwives who meet the criteria for eligibility are also able to purchase the government subsidised insurance package through MIGA (see www.miga.com.au ).
Women employing the services of a midwife who is eligible and has a Medicare provider number and works within collaborative arrangements, may be able to get a Medicare rebate for the care they receive. Midwives Australia Associates will be able to access considerable advice within the member’s area about eligibility and collaborative arrangements
There are several university courses specifically for midwives seeking endorsement for scheduled medicines becoming available. This will mean that midwives will be able to prescribe from the appropriate formulary that applies in their state or territory. Midwives must consider which course meets their needs the best including assessments and course fees.
