Until recently most midwives working in private practice provided predominantly care for women intending to birth in the home. There is now potential for midwives working in a range of services to work as self-employed practitioners.
Women can now claim Medicare rebates for a range of midwifery services:
* Short and long antenatal consultations
* Midwifery care planning visits
* Birth care in hospital#
* Short and long postnatal consultations
# Currently Queensland is the only state to have midwives credentialed to admit their clients and provide inpatient services. Midwives Australia is working towards this in other states and will update this as they become available.
Private practice options are many and varied. Midwives Australia is the one stop shop for midwives wishing to establish or reorganise their private practice. We understand that there may be a range of issues that need to be resolved and have resources and expertise to assist.
Midwives Australia developed a Business Resource Folder for which outlines the steps in establishing a private practice. We do not have the resources to continually update the resource so the Business resource folder was gifted to Midwifery Maternity Provider Organisation Australia (MMPOA) and is now available via their on line store. http://www.mmpoa.com.au/shop-with-us/
